People Like Me 2002: Face to Face!
PLM 2002 is a fantastic leap into the world of masks! Characters from Italian Commedia dell'Arte played by Diane Wasnak and Jaron Hollander
embark on a quest, guiding the audience through an extraordinary
exploration of the world and themselves through the power of music and
masked dance. Coming face to face with similarities and differences of
cultural expression, children are inspired to discover tolerance,
understanding and pride in their own identities.
A creation story with Raven and Snowy Owl is performed by Yup’ik Eskimo Chuna McIntyre. Ellen Brooks appears as a sumo wrestling Mosquito in the style of Japanese Kyogen, and Ensambles Ballet Folklorico de San Francisco
presents the graceful and poignant Mexican Deer Dance from the Yaqui
Indians. Balinese Topeng master, I Nyoman Sumandhi, collaborates with Gamelan Sekar Jaya to bring spirits and clowns to life, and the Sunugal Ballet enacts an exciting and energetic masked wedding dance from Guinea Bissau, in West Africa.
Fantastic pre-show characters by Txi Whizz and Ross Barrett of Fools Theater
welcome the children and get them involved, and the cast plays and
dances with the kids in the lobby after the show! Don't miss this
eclectic and unique combination of world dance disciplines which
highlight one of the most universal artistic creations, the mask!
